It would have been nice to put OS X on my fairly new 1.3 AMD, or even the 1.6 P4 at work (if nothing else than to save the TORTURE that was my Win98/2000 install from HELL, freakin' M$. Now I can Crash twice as fast!). But we know that won't be happening anytime soon.

Can't wait to get a new Mac to replace my old one (that I no longer have BTW) after I move. Maybe a nice Cool (pun intended) iBook (c'mon 1 GHz G3 + 32 MB vid card), or an eMac to play with untill I can afford a new Tower. Who knows what we'll have by then?

GigaHertz, shmigahertz. If I can run FCP off of a 320 GB hard drive in almost real-time with out the crashing, I'll be happy.

    Another couple of months.

    We'll see what happens.

The next Mac Mini should be fine for that. If as hoped it gets a Sandy Bridge processor it'll make the MacBook Air look terribly slow in comparison for CPU intensive tasks, especially if you put a SSD in the Mini.

As for EyeTV, the current Mini isn't as powerful as many of us would like, but I find it to be adequate. Hopefully the refresh will correct this and allow smooth playing of live sport in HDTV using progressive scan.

I think part of the issue was the 2.13 core2duo processor in the Macbook Air, but I agree that the next Mac Mini should be much more powerful. The Graphics Card will be a downgrade, but shouldn't be that much of a difference.

Sorry to hear that my man, but recognizing a problem is half-way to curing it.

No. There is only one TB/MDP port (they share the same connector) on the 21". Only the 27" has two.

Thanks. So, the 27" iMac would support two external 22" hdmi/vga displays then?

Looks like Apple made it clear to me what size iPad they want me to buy. :)

What does that mean? Is there a larger one or something coming out? Spill the beans, don't be secretive and cryptic.
    :)

I'm learning about the Picker View and was pretty disappointed that the book didn't go beyond basic stuff. I went thru several other books and online as well as the built in Apple help
You talk about "the book". Which book? And who is the author? Also, what were the "other" books?

Not one had an example of putting a pic inside the Picker.
The book was a single column, no example of multi column, or custom widths or loading from array.
See the UICatalog sample app for demonstrations of how to, at least, use images.

Basically I need MUCH more detail, eight book and not one goes into good detail.

Is there any book that REALLY gets under the hood and opens things up?
Of all the programming help/docs/books I read, it's pretty hard to imagine there's not a better book than these.
Most books don't go into the kind of detail I think you seek. They give you the basics and then it's up to you and your cleverness to use those fundamentals to adapt things to your needs.

Amazon's preview thing is pretty worthless, can't get into the meat of the book, the 'contents' doesn't tell you enuff.
They'll give you sample pages from a chapter. Any more and they'd be giving away to real content and some would have no incentive to buy the book, would they?

    Hi Craig

I also have a 2007 MBP which had 2 upgrades from Tiger.

When I upgraded to an SSD, I saw that my Library folder was around 12gb in size and was not getting the full benefits of SSD which had been advertised. 2gb were for email database but I had no idea of other 10gb...

The best I found was to re-install and start afresh with new installs and just the apps I needed.

I used an application which copied folder names into a text file. I formatted the computer and picked and chose the applications I wanted to reinstall.

Used TimeMachine to copy My Documents folder back and done.

Just keep in mind I used Firefox sync which copied my bookmarks, history etc. (although Add-Ons had to be reinstalled).

Couldn't have been happier to just format it rather than messing around.

You can see this behavior among Mac users, too.

You know, when they're down. During the first Dark Days, of Quadras and Performas and the like, when Apple lost some of its magic...

I personally felt it during the deep days of the G4, getting off the high that THIS processor was frikin' awesome and the best out there, and denying the fact that the G4 really was lagging far behind.

We as Mac users also have to come to the point of acceptance: We have to accept that there is some excellent PC hardware out there, some of which really bested our stuff for a good while there...

Then we can go back to the gloating stage, because we have the G5. Hopefully, there will never be a need to go to denial again, although comparisons to AMD, I'm afraid, may cause us denial sooner than we think.

I have five things that could derail Apple:

    1) Meteorite strikes 1 Infinite Loop. Steve Jobs is great and all, but let's face it. He's no Apache Chief. The laws of probability say it's just a matter of time until a meteorite crashes into Apple's Cupertino campus. We'll just have to see what happens then.

    2) Alien contact brings new technology. Aliens-- we know they're out there. It's only a matter of time before the Government agrees to public disclosure. When that happens the market will be flooded with technology so advanced that nobody will be caught dead using Apple products. Why have an iPhone when you can have a ;3ant409aus.

    3) Rick Santelli inspires a whole new anti-Apple political party. They'll takeover congress and the White House and shut Apple down.

    4) Data shortage. All those ones and zeros, they come from somewhere. China and Russia is currently buying up much of the worlds resources of the foundation of our digital empire. Soon we may have to switch to twos and threes, but they're more expensive. People won't be able to afford Apple's products anymore.

    5) Pack of Tyrannosaurs attack. Yes Apple security is a well-oiled machine, but could they hold their own against a tyrannosaurus rex? I don't think so.

Hire me CNBC! I can write great articles.

trim is only supported on SSD's that you buy from apple, and only recently.

As the other poster said, there haven't been problems with people running 3rd party SSD's w/o trim enabled. In fact some users have reported problems with their drives after enabling trim support.

If you really feel you must have it, search the boards, there is a tutorial here on how to enable it through some simple command lines.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe SSD's with the Sandforce controller such as the Vertex 3 don't need TRIM as the controller takes care of this function.

Correct, pay a one time fee of $20 or $25 for My-Wi on demand. My-Wi on demand automatically creates a wifi hotspot when necessary so you don't have to constantly have to switch on and off. By far one of the best reasons to jailbreak an iDevice.

Thanks now i just need to choose between AT&T and Verizon.

The griffin technology ones are terrible. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and the screen protector was torn. Had a giant hole down the middle. My heart dropped thank god my phone was fine. There was nothing in my pocket either it snagged on my jeans, where the little side button is. Have never had a problem with power support. By far the best out there. Well worth the money. Especially over Zagg.

    Thanks for the link.

Now I am confused. You say that SGP first made the oleo protectors with two cuts and then one cut.

Does the current oleos have single or double cut?

I don't know. I haven't purchased the oleos since they first came out. Someone else who has purchased more recently will have to answer that.

Currently, I think that the XBox 360 is better. Nothing can beat Gears of War. Well, perhaps Rainbow Six Vagas. Both are using Unreal Engine 3. I think that the year that the 360 had gave devs time to figure out what was going on. This is why the 360 prolly looks better. I don't think that we will ever see a huge difference till the end life of the consoles. That's when we will see what's going on.

Cheers for your feedback guys! :)

The animation is a little bit choppy in parts as I had to remove so many frames and change timings to get the overall file within the size limits.

Anyway, bit of background on my entry...

I wanted to use a character of some sort and Newton seemed a good choice because of the obvious connection with the apple; this also has some personal relevance because I have a degree in Physics!

I've got a PowerBook myself, but the reason why I chose to drop an iBook on Newton's head is because the white shows up better (since I gave him grey hair)... also when I first signed up to MR I was interested in buying an iBook and my very first post was in the "New iBooks Next Tuesday?" thread. I had to change the text to Wednesday what with the recent releases, but I thought that including this all-too familiar thread topic kinda captured the boards :p

I've got some ideas for other avatars too, but not sure if I'll have time to execute them...
